With each passing year that I’ve been a homeowner, I’ve wanted to have a monthly house maintenance schedule. A system, easy enough to follow, that would somehow alert me when particular tasks needed to be done. I also wanted to spread all the tasks over a year, to make it manageable.
I started by rifling trough the Internet for such lists, and there are many. From there, I picked tasks that seemed to work for our house, our climate and our calendar. Our maintenance schedule relates to our current situation; i.e. family of two, no pets, unfinished basement that we clean only as needed, etc. Yours might look different, depending on where you live and how many people are in your household.
The trick here, once you have a list you like, is to transfer everything on a calendar. Because …
Simply having a To Do List won’t get the job done.
I could have used my paper planner or the calendar on my phone, but I wanted something that would exist independently, would be easy to set up and be visual. For some reason any apps I’ve tried on my phone are not doing it for me AT ALL.
So I decided to test out Google Keep Notes. I like the visual capabilities that let you add an image and colour code notes. You can also set reminders/alerts. Notes can be shared, but unfortunately the reminders and colour coding are only visible to me (maybe a Google improvement for later?).
The other tidbits I like about this system is that the notes can be updated by both of us, in real time – thank you very much, by checking off a task or adding one to a note. The checked off tasks move to the bottom of the note and remain there; they’re not deleted or hidden. At the end of the month, I can go back to the note and uncheck all tasks, to be reused the following year. Notes can also be easily moved with dragging and dropping functions.
Other online calendars have that function too, so don’t feel like you need to use this system, just use whatever works for you.
Does it mean all the tasks get done all the time? Umm nope! Does it help to keep track of things and keep us accountable? Absolutely!
