20 Things to Declutter Today
It’s easy to get bogged down by clutter.
You buy a few replacement items and forget to get rid of the old ones.
Life gets busy and your good decluttering habits go out the window.
Or maybe you’ve outgrown a season of life, a hobby or a practice.
Whatever the reasons, it’s nothing a good decluttering session can’t fix.
List of 20 things to declutter to get you started:
1. Old electronics you’re not using anymore and cords that belong to devices you don’t have. Collect and bring to the Eco-Station or your recycling centre.
2. CDs and DVDs of music and movies you’re not into anymore.
3. Magazines dating back six months or more that you have not read yet.
4. Extra notebooks and pens that have been sitting unused for years.
5. Catalogs and promotions you receive through the mail. Better yet, stop them from coming into your house by installing a sign on your mailbox.
6. Books you’re never going to read, or read again; pass them on to someone who will.
7. Unsubscribe from newsletters you don’t read anymore.
8. Old tax files. You only need to keep 7 years back. Make sure you shred these, to protect your identity.
9. Medicine and grooming products. Check the labels and best before dates. Take your old meds to the pharmacy, don’t throw them in the toilet or garbage.
10. Beauty products you’re not using or don’t like, even if they’re still good. You can donate them to a friend who will use them, but there is no reason for you to keep these.
11. Extra towels and linens. Keep your best ones. Discard the rest. Hint: you only need one or two sets per bed and about two bath towels per person.
12. Duplicates of cooking utensils. How many spatulas does one need anyway? Hint: one or two is probably enough.
13. Food items that are past their expiration date. Cans and condiments also have a best before date, check those out in your pantry and fridge.
14. Food items you tried, but realized you don’t like. Just like beauty products, the amount of money you spent doesn’t justify the added unnecessary clutter.
15. Water bottles and food containers. They seem to multiply in the darkness of your cupboards. Throw away or recycle the leaky, broken, ratty ones.
16. Reusable bags. OMG, these are nice to have, but not 50 of them! Keep some specifically for groceries and a few more for other uses and donate the rest.
17. Decor items, AKA knick-knacks and shit to dust, you don’t like, but keep because someone gave them to you. A gift is not supposed to be a burden.
18. Mismatched socks or ones with holes.
19. Clothes that don’t fit, have stains or are not repairable.
20. Board games that are now bored games.
Now I’d like to hear from you. While decluttering, what other items have you found that you decluttered?
