New Colours for our Home

New colours for our home

Remodelling takes time, or at least it’s taking us a long time. And so our rule is we won’t redo stuff that’s already been done, just because we suddenly don’t like it anymore; unless of course it’s broken or falling apart or something. Our list of “unfinished projects“ is still way too long to redo much of anything. But we had to do some repairs in our main living area, and that gave us the opportunity to revamp our colours.

An interior designer had suggested the original colours a few years back (rusty orange and powder blue). At first, I liked them enough, but I got tired really quickly of the orange: too dark, too common and not the look I felt we wanted to achieve.

Here is what it looked like at first.

Inspo from a record player!

My husband bought a vehicle to revamp (that’s what he does when he’s not working at his day job or on the house). The thing had been parked in a field for some time. The previous owner had left what seemed to have been the remnants of his life in the vehicle: clothing, model cars, books and a record player among other nick-knacks. We don’t like throwing things in the landfill, so we washed the clothes and gathered the books and gave them to a couple of donation centres. A few other things might be part of our next garage sale. But this record player was sort of the jumping point to say YES to this vibrant new colour.

I knew I wanted grey instead of the orange and I’ve been having an obsession with peacock colours for quite some time. I tried to select more subdued blues, but I kept coming back to a vibrant, yet calming blue/green emerald palette.

Since it’s only paint after all, we decided to settle on Pompeian Blue and Hailstorm Grey by Sico and I’m in love.

The new colours have a Mid-Century Modern meet Art Deco feel and I’m here for it.

In the process of repainting our hallway, the old oil paint made the new acrylic peel off, even though we had painted this particular wall before.

So we had to strip it down completely, sand a bit and redo.

And this is what it looks like when you’ve been painting for a day and it’s starting to be late.
