Maintaining a home takes time, whether you live in a mansion or a tiny apartment.
Instead of trying to do too much at once, keep up with our Monthly Maintenance Checklist and take care of your home effortlessly.
Home Maintenance Checklist Series
1. Limit Allergens
Make sure you take care of your heating system and limit dust and potential allergens. If you have forced air heat, change the filter regularly. If you have radiant heat, vacuum and/or wipe your radiators.
It’s also a good idea to flip and vacuum your mattress. Most vacuums come with a special attachment design for this task.
2. Let the Light Shine In
This is not a task I enjoy doing, but once in a while treating our windows to some deep cleaning is highly satisfying.
Again, you could hire pros to do this.
Take down curtains and machine wash if possible, or take to the dry cleaners.
If you have blinds, put them in the closed position and wipe or, again, hire a pro.
Using an old toothbrush, dislodge the grime first and then vacuum your window sills (and tracks if your window design has them). Then, wash your windows with warm water and a few drops of dish soap (or your favourite window cleaner). Use a liquid to clean the tracks as a last resort.
When your curtains are clean and the spin cycle has extracted most of the water, just hang to dry.
Once a year, power wash the house. We have the proper tool and Hubby loves that thing :).
3. Degunk your kitchen
All of your appliances work hard for you every day.
Maintain them by cleaning them thoroughly, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Descale your coffee maker and kettle with vinegar or special product made for that purpose.
Empty the toaster of all the bread bits and wipe.
Steam clean your microwave with a half lemon in water at full blast for 30 seconds (or more); makes it easy to remove the stuck on food and makes it smell fresh.
You can use the half lemon in your garbage disposal, if you have one, for a quick refresh.
4. Add some life
Summers are somewhat short in Canada, or the planting season anyway. Don’t miss it. Add some colour to your flower beds, pots or balcony planters.
Weeding is part of gardening or maintaining a yard. It’s quite dry here usually, but any time we get showers, weeds grow like crazy. It’s also easier to remove them when the soil is damp.
5. Clean Out the Garage
Once a year, it’s also a good idea to declutter and clean out your garage and/or shed. There’s bound to be stuff in there you don’t use anymore or need to go to the eco-station.
6. School’s out
If you have school-aged kids, there is a good chance they will come home with a collection of art and school projects. Decide together what you want to keep and then preserve them properly. There are infinite ways to keep the precious ones: frame some, collect in a nice binder, add a few to a souvenir box, scan or take photos and order a photobook, etc.
These are just ideas, you should increase or diminish the frequency for each task according to your household habits. Also, please make sure you always check your user manuals for instructions before you tackle any electronics or appliances.
